Savoy is located in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, bordering Switzerland and Italy. This biscuit confection originated in Savoy, made using a separate baking method. Considering that combined baking had long been the norm in France, this method was extremely innovative for a 14th-century regional confection. The origins of Savoy biscuits date back to 1358, at the court of Chambéry in Savoy. Count Amédée VI of Savoy served the dessert to Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor of Luxembourg, for dinner. The emperor was delighted with the feather-light and fluffy Savoy biscuits .
This is a confection with a long history, with stories including one about it being made in the shape of the castle of Chambery, a golden confection inspired by an emperor's crown, or a mountain in the Alps.
